The Opportunity:
At Grafana Labs, we build observability tools that help users understand, respond to, and improve their systems – regardless of scale, complexity, or tech stack. We are building an AI-native data intelligence system that gives agents reliable, governed access to enterprise context. As a Staff-level Backend Engineer, you will design and ship the core backend architecture that powers ingestion, context storage, retrieval APIs, and agent-facing integrations for this new system.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Build core backend services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration, and system administration.
- Define and build the architecture for a multi-tenant service, including tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, and background jobs.
- Build APIs and service interfaces that allow AI agents, MCP tools, and internal applications to retrieve context, provenance, and confidence signals.
- Partner with the team to make practical tradeoffs between fast experimentation and long-term reliability.
- Operate the services you build by instrumenting metrics, logs, traces, and alerts to ensure high reliability.
- Contribute to technical direction regarding storage choices, API contracts, and deployment patterns.
What Makes You a Great Fit:
- Strong experience building production-grade, user-facing software systems.
- Familiarity with AI technologies and a focus on delivering high-quality, practical solutions.
- Comfortable releasing prototypes, collecting feedback, and iterating with a pragmatic mindset.
- Experience dealing with ambiguity and defining project scope.
- Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, and building applications powered by GenAI.
- Proven track record of delivering software into production environments.
- Exposure to cloud-native environments (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
- Experience using observability tools to troubleshoot system behavior.
