The Engineering team
In our engineering team, we build the infrastructure, interfaces, and applications to provide first-class service to our members, health professionals, and even ourselves! Being an engineer at Alan means joining a team of talented, committed and passionate engineers, with a lot of interactions. We move fast, with a lot of ownership, and are proud to tackle big problems. We are also the stewards of our members' most sensitive data, and building privacy in by design is core engineering work for us.
The Stack
Python/Flask/React and PostgreSQL at the core, in a monorepo we deploy daily. You build it, you own it. (Wider platform: AWS/GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, Datadog.)
Mission
You'll own the Data Privacy Orchestrator, the platform 15+ areas and 1M+ members depend on to handle personal data safely. Your job is to build safe-by-default abstractions at scale and enable every area to run its own data lifecycle, so the platform no longer depends on one person.
What you'll do
- Own and run the platform: its core engine, safety mechanisms (preview/dry-run, audit trail), and operational health (deploys, on-call, observability).
- Build the paved road: docs, templates, and self-serve tooling so any area plugs in and manages its own data rules.
- Bridge across areas: align legal, security, data, and product on requirements; resolve deletion-ordering trade-offs.
- Grow the surface: extend coverage across data stores and third-party systems as Alan expands into new countries.
Experience we value
- Senior/staff-level backend or platform engineering experience with evidence of deep production ownership.
- Experience building and operating platforms, libraries, or services that other engineers depend on.
- Ability to influence across teams (legal, security, data, and product) to align on plans and drive them to completion.
- Pragmatism under constraint: shipping sound, safe solutions and improving them over time.
- Strong plus: prior privacy, GDPR, or data-governance exposure.
