About Share
Share is a venture-backed internet infrastructure network building Africa's backbone. The company aggregates underutilized telecom infrastructure, fiber, subsea cables, and data centers, and provides ISPs with scalable access to bandwidth. At the network level, Share operates a RADIUS proxy architecture that authenticates ISP subscribers and provisions internet access, coordinating with partner BNG (Broadband Network Gateway) equipment.
The role
We are hiring a VP of Systems Engineering to build, own, and lead Share's network-facing infrastructure. This is a player-coach role where you will be hands-on with FreeRADIUS servers, deployment scripts, and troubleshooting authentication, while eventually building and leading a team to scale infrastructure from 10 to 500 ISP clients.
What you will own
- FreeRADIUS proxy architecture: Manage the central proxy configuration, failover mechanisms, and scaling of authentication routing.
- Per-partner FreeRADIUS servers: Administer dedicated FreeRADIUS instances with Hono API overlays for subscriber credential management.
- BNG integration support: Collaborate with the network team to define and validate BNG-side configurations for ISP partners.
- Provisioning pipeline: Oversee the infrastructure receiving subscriber credentials and plan attributes from the software platform.
- Infrastructure and deployment: Manage server provisioning, automation, logging, and security, including GitHub Actions and VM management.
- CoA (Change of Authorization): Design and implement endpoints for real-time session management without re-authentication.
- Team and technical leadership: Establish standards, runbooks, and architectural roadmaps while mentoring the growing systems engineering team.
Technical environment
- RADIUS and Networking: FreeRADIUS (v3/v4), Access/Accounting protocols, PPPoE authentication, and MikroTik RouterOS BNG concepts.
- Systems and Infrastructure: Ubuntu Linux, Docker, Hono (Node.js framework), PostgreSQL, and GitHub Actions.
- Observability: Loki, Pino, and Sentry for logging and error tracking.
- Integration: NestJS provisioning microservices and Kafka-driven event architectures.
AI-augmented engineering (required mindset)
Share utilizes AI as a core component of its engineering workflow. You are expected to use LLMs and agents for configuration generation, troubleshooting, documentation, and scripting. You must be able to validate AI-generated specifications against real-world networking constraints and contribute to maintaining AI-ready documentation and runbooks.
